This collection of music pieces and soundscape compositions are taken from a series of three experimental short films I made in 2019: Playback Head Part 1, 2 and 3. Assembled from footage collected over a period of fifty years, on video and Super 8 film, they relate to events of my life growing up in Brazil, immigrating to Canada as an adult, and starting a family in a foreign place. Images and sounds are combined in a synesthetic depiction of past events—recollections of childhood, travelling, and different homes—that allude to the associative nature of memory, and its ambiguous essence. Music and sound have a prominent role in the films. Dissociated from the image, they are here presented in an album featuring extended or slightly modified versions of the original pieces.
Instruments: electric and acoustic guitars, cavaquinho, piano, music boxes, children toys, digital portable recorder, cassette and micro-cassette recorders, reel-to-reel tape machine, Super 8 projector.
Recorded in several locations in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and Vancouver, Canada.
Mixed at the Sonic Research Studio, SFU (Vancouver)
